[edit] The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

The Windmill can be found in Kakariko Village, being the largest building and most recognizable landmark of the village. It is used to bring water up from the nearby well. Strangely, when Link enters the Windmill, the text that appears reads "?" and not "Windmill"; this may be due to the fact that the building is connected to Dampé's Grave, which also reads "?" when Link enters it. The music in the Windmill is an extended version of the "Song of Storms".

The Windmill contains an upper level; while standing on the edge of a roof of a nearby house, Link can use his Longshot to grapple himself to a wooden post located inside a square hole high up on the front of the Windmill. The hole can only be seen briefly between the blades of the windmill as they spin. Upon reaching the hole, Link faces a staircase leading up, as well as a good view of the entire village in between the windmill blades. Following the staircase leads only to another hole and oddly, a Cucco. This Cucco can be used to reach the back entrance to Impa's house, allowing Link to get the Piece of Heart therein.

Inside the Windmill, Link meets Guru-Guru, who is trying to come up with a musical theme inspired by the Windmill. In the future, when talked to, Guru-Guru angrily recalls that in the past, a small child played a song for him that "messed up" the Windmill. Guru-Guru teaches Link this song, known as the "Song of Storms". Link travels back to the past and plays it for him, causing the Windmill to drain the water from the well and allowing Link to enter it.

The Windmill can be found just east of Horon Village in the Eastern Suburbs. In front of it stands Guru-Guru, who constantly plays his Phonograph. If Link gives him Engine Grease the Windmill will begin to spin faster, and the "Song of Storms" that plays in the background speeds up as well. After this, Guru-Guru gives Link his Phonograph; this is part of the trading quest for the Noble Sword.

[edit] The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker

The Windmill is located on Windfall Island. It serves not only as a Windmill, however, but as a ferris wheel and lighthouse as well. If Link changes the direction of the wind to the north with the Wind Waker, and steps on the switch on top of the ladder in the back of Salvatore's shop, the Windmill is reactivated. Kreeb is overjoyed to see the lighthouse restored; if a Fire Arrow is shot into the center of the unlit beacon, Kreeb will give Link a Piece of Heart for seeing the lighthouse's light restored. A chest holding a Treasure Chart on a small island to the south of Windfall also materializes.

[edit] Theory

Theory warning: This section contains theoretical information based on the viewpoints or research of one or several other users. It has not been officially verified by Nintendo and its factual accuracy is disputed.

As some people speculate that Windfall Island was once Kakariko Village, some believe that the Windmill from The Wind Waker is the same one as in Ocarina of Time.
