Seeing as the People category was defined to me as any sentient being in the games other than a deity, and that Ricky is definitely sentient, I'm adding him to the People category. Feel free to disagree and state your reasons. Dinosaur bob 23:00, 5 October 2007 (EDT)

Ricky's gender[]

Although the game was released in 2001, I realized just this week that male kangaroos have no pouch. The natural consequence is that Ricky is a female kangaroo. It took me ten years to realize it, so it is OK if the Japanese developers and/or the localization teams made the mistake: obviously they did not have ten years of time to work on the game!
As a side note, I often see "electric" jellyfish in Japanese games and medias, although jellyfish are not electric at all: they have microscopic acidic needles. --Abacos (talk) 22:18, 29 October 2015 (UTC)

We usually go with what the games say, and because the game doesn't ever specify its gender, we use the closest thing, which is the manual, where it specifies that Ricky is male. Even if in real life it's wrong, we have to go with what the in-game universe says. - Chuck * (Talk) 22:48, 29 October 2015 (UTC)
Still, I don't like the line "a pouch is normally characteristic of female kangaroos". The word "normally" implies that it's possible that a minority of male kangaroos have a pouch, but that is wrong. Having been a school teacher, I always try to arginate the spreading of errors and to spread correct knowledge instead. --Abacos (talk) 13:19, 30 October 2015 (UTC)
A minority do -- primarily the fictional ones, but intersex eastern gray kangaroos, red kangaroos, euros, tammar wallabies, and quokkas do exist (admittedly, -only- the intersex kangaroos, as compared to some other species of marsupials, where all males also have the pouch). [1]. So, it's not even wrong in real life, and is perfectly accurate as worded. Diversity exists, kids!
As far as the jellyfish, those are magic.KrytenKoro (talk) 14:35, 30 October 2015 (UTC)
Apologies Kryten, I did not mean to undo your edit. Some kind of edit conflict occurred that the wiki did not detect.
Okay, I admit that the wording is wrong and a mistake on my part. It however still does not make Ricky a female when the manual clearly states otherwise. Manuals are also canon material according to our canon policy. - Midoro (T C) 17:36, 30 October 2015 (UTC)
I wouldn't even say the wording was wrong. Male kangaroos with pouches are rare (extremely rare), but scientifically confirmed to exist. The current wording isn't technically wrong either, but I just wanted to point out that you had not actually done anything incorrect.KrytenKoro (talk) 17:53, 30 October 2015 (UTC)
I don't think it was the developers' intention that Ricky is a rare male kangaroo specimen with a pouch. Pretty sure their thought was "Oh Link can ride in a pouch, that is convenient." But it's kind of whatever now. But the point is, the manual is not wrong, and nowhere in the game does it state Ricky is a he or she. Therefore we look to the manual, so it is correct regardless of the oddity. - Midoro (T C) 18:13, 30 October 2015 (UTC)

That's fine by me. I understood I was wrong, and I learned something new (kangaroos are cool). Thanks for your time. You know, I am very diffident about manuals because in my personal experience they are FULL of errors and, even worse, full of spoilers. Therefore, since the mid-nineties, I refuse to trust them. The first time I ever played a role-playing game (Ultima VI: the False Prophet), the manual stated that you had to bring your experience down to zero in order to gain a level. Inexplicably, the game crashed, although I did what the manual said! And this is only one example of my many, many bad experiences with manuals. --Abacos (talk) 19:15, 7 November 2015 (UTC)

In an interesting little blip in this saga, Ricky's profile on the Zelda.com Oracle games page refers to Ricky as being female. The plot seems to thicken! --CommodoreJim (talk) 23:09, 30 June 2018 (UTC)

The manual takes precedence over the website so while it should be mentioned somewhere on the page, it would either be as trivia or as a note next to the citation. At any rate, the Encyclopedia uses male pronouns for Ricky in the description for his Gloves. User:Link Lab/sig 10:19, 1 July 2018 (UTC)
