Race[]

Her profile says that she's human, but is that correct? Are there humans in LoZ? It seems as though she would be a Hyrulean (not Hylian, mind you). Am I wrong? Alter  {T C B H } 05:32, 7 May 2009 (UTC)

Hylian = pointy ears. Human = no pointy ears. Hyrulean = any resident of Hyrule (including Gorons, Zoras, etc.). Maple doesn't live in Hyrule. --Makar Rocks 05:38, 7 May 2009 (UTC)
Well, I agree with Makar Rocks. It's helpful to have a distinction between the human and nonhuman Hyruleans. By the way Makar, you've been doing great work with all of the categorizations lately. Axiomist (talk) 07:53, 7 May 2009 (UTC)
Yes, you have been doing a good job. I understand that, but that's more of a Lord of the Rings idea than Zelda. As I previously said, LoZ has never made a mention of humans. But Maple also appears in ALttP (Hyrule), not just Holodrum. Besides, Holodrum is in Hyrule (world), not another dimension, although many people believe that.
I'm going to say that she's a Hyrulean. Alter  {T C B H } 17:17, 7 May 2009 (UTC)

"Hylian = pointy ears. Human = no pointy ears. Hyrulean = any resident of Hyrule (including Gorons, Zoras, etc.). Maple doesn't live in Hyrule."
That pretty much says it all. I don't see why there is further need to question it. :? Mandi Talk 17:29, 7 May 2009 (UTC)

Because that's a fan-made idea based on other series, such as Warcraft, LotR, etc.
Let me bold this part- I can see that no one read what I said. Holodrum is in Hyrule (world). Excluding that fact, Maple is in ALttP! If I'm correct, Hyrule is in Hyrule! Not trying to sound like I'm getting frustrated, but I can tell that no one has actually carefully read what I said. Search the text dumps- Humans are never mentioned in Zelda. Alter  {T C B H } 18:00, 7 May 2009 (UTC)
First of all, I did indeed, read what you said. Very carefully too. What Makar Rocks has aleady pointed out is logic. Pointed ears are a known trait of the Hylian race. Maple does not possess pointed ears. Therefore, this puts her into the category of: Human. Now, any human that is a resident of Hyrule is usually referred to as, Hyrulean. Maple is not a resident of Hyrule. Therefore I don't believe it would be proper to categorize her as such.Mandi Talk 18:56, 7 May 2009 (UTC)
P.S. Holodrum is not a part of Hyule. Not that I am aware of anyhow. But, then again, my Zelda knowledge is a bit rusty. :P
Ok, thanks for reading it. :D
But she appears to live in Hyrule in ALttP. Also, Princess Zelda visits Holodrum, coming from the country of Hyrule. The OoS manga, although non-canon, states that Holodrum is nearby Hyrule (in the same world, not the same country). It is my understanding that those who live in the world of Hyrule are "Hyruleans" (Not Hylians)). The issue that humans are never mentioned in Zelda does raise a red flag, however. I'd like to think that Zelda is a little more original than something such as warcraft, that simply copied Tolkien's (Lord of the Rings author) ideas of humans, elves (Hylians), and dwarfs (gorons). Yes, I know that this is a bit of a stretch, but you can take my word for it, as I have done quite a bit of study on how the ideas of creatures such as elves, dwarfs, etc evolved.
I guess I'm taking this a little out of range. Now I'm discussing the whole race system here. Anyway, she does live in the world of Hyrule, and appears to live in the country. I think that means she's a Hyrulean. Sorry if I went off on a tangent there. lol Alter  {T C B H } 20:40, 7 May 2009 (UTC)

She is not in ALttP. They just reused her sprite in the rerelease of ALttP for the GBA. That's not Maple. character sprites and models have been reused before for completely different characters. That does not make them the same character. Think the Chicken Lady from OoT, and Anju from MM. They are completely different characters. So Maple is not in Hyrule at all. I'm fairly certain that even in the GBA remake that character is called the "Witch's Apprentice".Matt (Talk) 20:53, May 7, 2009 (UTC)

Alright. Well, you can do whatever, but I'm still going to stick with the fact that Holodrum is in the world of Hyrule. Another reason for this would be that Impa states (in a linked game) that she is visiting from the country of Hyrule, and is Zelda caretaker, thus indicating that it is still the world. That is just my take on it.
I guess the real question is: If you live in the world of Hyrule, are you a Hyrulean? I would think so, since we are all earthlings. ; ) lol So what do you think? Alter  {T C B H } 21:22, 7 May 2009 (UTC)
The world is not called Hyrule. It doesn't have a name, but we know it is not Hyrule.
Quote1 You have...never been to Hyrule, right? In the kingdom of Hyrule there is a great castle, and around it is Castle Town,

a community far bigger than our little village. ...And far bigger than Hyrule is the rest of the world the gods created. You should look upon it all with your own eyes.

So, no, she is not in any Hyrule.Matt (Talk) 21:59, May 7, 2009 (UTC)
Ok, I'll just let it go. The "world of Hyrule" has actually been mentioned by Nintendo, although I can't remember the source. I'll just drop it until I come across it again.

P.S. I believe that ZU had that posted about a year or two back, and it surprised me to find that out. Alter  {T C B H } 22:56, 7 May 2009 (UTC)

Wow! Didn't expect so much debate here. Even if the name "Humans" for non-Hylians is fanon, there has to be some distinction between the two races because there's such an obvious physical difference (Rusl vs. Chudley, for instance). I also think that Hyrule is a kingdom in an unnamed world, so a resident of Labrynna or Holodrum could not be called a Hyrulean. And thanks for the compliment, Axiomist! --Makar Rocks 00:02, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

I always looked at it like this: If it can cause a debate, then something's wrong. I was thinking, one acceptable solution would be to use 'People' and scrap 'Human' bc at best those two categories can be exactly the same. Btw Alter I always read what you write here. I think "World of Hyrule," "World of Mario," & such are less of canon terms than nintendo referring to the series. I mean the Great Sea would have kept the World name if it weren't just a Kingdom's name, in my opinion. Axiomist (talk) 05:51, 8 May 2009 (UTC)
I'm in agreeance with you, Ax. Well, when I was refering to "world", I meant the actual globe, which I do believe has been officially called Hyrule. Anyway, that's irrelevant. So does anyoneelse agree with the "people" idea? Alter  {T C B H } 04:21, 9 May 2009 (UTC)
Hyrule is a country in a world that has a name of which is unknown. It is a single country. Think of it like this: the rest of our world isn't referred to as America.Mandi Talk 04:39, 9 May 2009 (UTC)
  • sighs* I keep refering to an interveiw with Eiji, where he states that the coutry of Hyrule should not be confused with the world (as in globe) of Hyrule. ZU ran it a year or two back. Can't find it though, so it's moot. Alter  {T C B H } 04:48, 9 May 2009 (UTC)
I'm not sure I'm fully understanding the people thing. There is already a category for People, and it refers to all speaking/sentient/whatever characters of any race/species/whatever. I love that category as it is. Very handy to look up all characters from the games and it's one of the most viewed pages on the whole wiki. Unless the games finally give a name to the non-pointy-eared race, I think they should just be called Human as a placeholder name. I think they need SOME name, because the game designers are intentionally making some Homo sapiens-esque characters non-Hylian. As for the Hyrule Kingdom/World thing, if you could find that quote, it might change things. I'm not sure what to do about that one. Maybe this discussion's getting out of hand. I've just been categorizing articles into People, Hylian, Human, and Hyrulean recently and it's enjoyable. :P --Makar Rocks 05:23, 9 May 2009 (UTC)

For lack of a better term, I say we stick with "Human". Any other name we come up with would just be even more non-canon. It is the best we can have. So that's what it should stay as.Matt (Talk) 05:36, May 9, 2009 (UTC)

Wee! Edit conflicts! :P But yeah, I say we stick with "Human".Mandi Talk 05:40, 9 May 2009 (UTC)
Coming back to this: the problem is that "human" is used within the games, but includes Hylians, Gerudo, and several other tribes. I suppose you could say that, since it is a species rather than a race, it still applies, but it should not be portrayed as "separate" from the Hylians.KrytenKoro 17:52, 4 January 2012 (EST)

Maple in A Link Between Worlds?[]

In Lorule's fortune teller tent, there's an elderly witch with the fortune teller himself. When I first went there, the two had a conversation and the fortune teller referred to the witch as "Mapes", as if it were a nickname for "Maple". Could this be an elderly version of Maple? or, at the very least, a reference to her? I don't think I saw any such reference directed at Irene's Gran, who I initially believed to be an elderly Maple. --Z64 (talk) 14:58, 6 January 2014 (UTC)

Definitely a reference.KrytenKoro (talk) 02:09, 8 January 2014 (UTC)

Getting the heart piece[]

So I haven't looked into the game's code to confirm this, but I think I've noticed a pattern for getting Maple to drop rare items, including the heart piece, in the Oracle games. I've noticed that Maple seems to drop the heart piece more often if you consecutively encounter her in the same location. I've tried this on a few different playthroughs and at different locations, and I can usually get her to drop it by the 3rd or 4th consecutive encounter. It's possible I was just lucky, but I feel fairly confident about it. Can anyone else confirm or replicate this? --Jerutz (talk) 21:30, 23 December 2018 (UTC)

I always use the same locations to make her appear and sometimes it takes forever for the piece to appear, so that's definitely not it. - Chuck * (Talk) 23:15, 24 December 2018 (UTC)

Maples "All Items Lost" Lines[]

I mentioned in the main page that Maple has alternate lines for if all items are lost either in water/lava or down holes, though the chances of it happening were remote.
Question remains, though. Has anyone managed to get this to happen, and record what she says when this happens?
-Mugen Kagemaru (talk)

I started to look into this a few months back, when I rewrote the majority of Maple. I tried a few times in Oracle of Ages's mountain range, which has a few bodies of water, but must have forgotten to get back to it. Can you recall any Maple meeting locations that have many holes or are near the water or lava? Even ones with holes hidden under grass would do. Lost Woods in Holodrum might work. Htwretched (talk) 23:28, 10 December 2021 (UTC)
All I can offer you are these three maps. Good luck.
-Mugen Kagemaru (talk) 09:42, 11 December 2021 (UTC)
Well, I managed to sink all but one item in the farthest-east screen in Labrynna's past. It could have taken a long time to get the intended result. So instead I found a map editor and turned most of the screen into water. The line she says is.... a bit anti-climactic, but at least now we know. Htwretched (talk) 06:41, 12 December 2021 (UTC)
Actually, now I'm curious. Is it possible to draw with Maple in terms of item count?
I forget how many total items are dropped whenever you bump her, but if it's an even number, it should be possible, right? And if it is, what does she say at the end...?
-Mugen Kagemaru (talk) 08:48, 12 December 2021 (UTC)
For sure, I've had many draws with Maple. Just added the quote (end of 2nd paragraph). My latest check had her dropping 12 items, but I'm not sure if it varies, and some items can land overlapping others. Htwretched (talk) 01:27, 13 December 2021 (UTC)
