Swords are recurring weapons in the Legend of Zelda series. In virtually every game in the series, Link holds a sword in his left hand; the only exception being in the Wii version of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (due to the entire game being flipped into its mirror image to accommodate for the fact that most people are right-handed). The sword is Link's primary weapon throughout the series. The most famous blade in the series is the legendary Master Sword, forged by the Ancient Sages.

[edit] Obtaining

Most of the time, Link starts out with a relatively weak sword (such as the Wooden Sword or the Kokiri Sword) and acquires a more powerful one (such as the Master Sword or the White Sword) as the game progresses. In most Zelda games you can use a second, third or even a fourth sword. Sometimes, other swords are not required for completing the game, but can be obtained by completing various side quests, such as Biggoron's Sword and the Magical Sword. In other instances, specific swords are needed to overcome obstacles, such as the Light Sword or the Master Sword.

Most swords can be carried in one hand, along with a shield in the other. Some swords, however, require both hands to be held and used (see list below).
