— In-game description
Breath of the Wild Materials (Shooting Star) Star Fragment (Icon)

Star Fragments appear in Breath of the Wild where they are depicted as yellow rocks. They are rare stones that occasionally fall from the sky at night. Like previous games, they can be sold for Rupees. They can be used to upgrade armor, in particular the Sheik's Mask, all the Hero's Clothes armor sets or the final two upgrades for head jewelry. They can also be used in cooking and increase the likelihood of critical success. Link can also obtain them during certain side quests, in Treasure Chests, or by defeating Silver Lynels.

Shooting Stars

"If you're lucky, you might be able to see a shooting star when gazing at the night sky. If you go to where a shooting star lands, you'll fine treasure there! ...Or so I've heard. I would love to see a shooting star at least once in my life!"
Glendo

They appear as shooting stars at night and after hitting the ground, the fragment creates a glowing column of light which Link can use to find its location and collect it before morning. Shooting stars appear randomly at night and can land almost anywhere even in villages. A Star Fragment will remain obtainable as long as it is night and sunrise does not occur.

Sunrise Skipping Trick

If a Star Fragment is too far away to reach it before sunrise, if it is still night Link can past time via Campfire or Bed to night and the Star Fragment column will still be visible giving Link more time to reach it. Link can do this as many times as needed.

Possible inspiration

Theory warning: This section contains theoretical information based on the research of one or several other users. It has not been officially verified by Nintendo and its factual accuracy is disputed.

Star Fragments share a similar name and appearance with Star Bits from Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2, and may have been inspired by them.

They are also possible inspirations to Gratitude Crystals from The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword.

Theory warning: Theories end here.
