"Appears in dungeons. Covered in hard, spiny shells. Few attacks work on them. You have to flip them over to hurt them."
Figurine

Spiked Beetles, also known as Tozegos, are recurring enemies in the Legend of Zelda series. They are hard, spiky-shelled creatures that must be knocked on their backs to be defeated. This can easily be achieved with Link's shield; when they come in contact with Link's shield while he is defending, they are knocked over for a short while. They roam around in random patterns, but once they spot Link, they spin violently towards him, hoping to catch him with their spiky shell. They resemble Spinies of the Mario series.

Appearances

The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening

Spiked Beetle (Link's Awakening)

Spiked Beetles appear mostly inside dungeons. In the first dungeon, Tail Cave, Link must defeat a pair of Spiked Beetles to access the area of the dungeon holding the Roc's Feather. They can also be flipped over by using the Shovel. An Owl Statue in this dungeon will reveal to Link how to defeat them.

The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons

Spiked Beetles can be defeated by using Link's shield to flip them over, revealing their weak underside and allowing him to slash them with his sword. They can also be flipped by using the Shovel or Gale Seeds.

The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords

Spiked Beetle (Four Swords)

Spiked Beetles can appear in the Sea of Trees. Link must use his Shield to flip them over to allow for damaging them. As such, they often seem to be used as a trap or test in areas where shields are located. They also appear in the Hero's Trial's gold door.

The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap

The same shield and sword technique can be applied; however, Link can also flip Spiked Beetles with the Cane of Pacci. In this game, the Spiked Beetle also gets more detailed characteristics, such as a bright blue shell and a small hole in the shell where a head might be hiding. The boss of the second temple, Gleerok, has a shell reminiscent of the Spiked Beetle.
