Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

After acquiring the Hookshot, defeating Arrghus and rescuing the Second Maiden, Link sets off for the third dungeon on his map, located deep in the heart of Skull Forest. After pounding the stakes to the Dark World entrance, he approaches the forest courageously. What was once a peaceful and happy place, has now rotted into evil trees, dead foliage, and become infested with Ropa and holes. Once inside the Skull Palace, Link braves the Wallmaster, along with many other enemies to attain the Fire Rod. He then ventures to the dungeon's second entrance, blocked off by a giant stone creature. Using the Fire Rod to ignite the opening, he storms inside, seeking Mothula, the keeper of the Third Maiden. Falling into its lair, Mothula activates a moving floor and wandering traps in an attempt to destroy Link. Sword and Fire Rod in hand, Link incinerates Mothula, triumphing over the Skull Palace Dungeon and successfully rescuing the Third Maiden.

[edit] Dungeon

The Skull Palace is somewhat unusual in that it has several exterior entrances; Link must pass through part of the dungeon, exit to the Overworld, and then use another entrance to get to the second part. The main treasure item found in Skull Palace is the Fire Rod, which is needed to access the final area of the dungeon. The boss of this dungeon is Mothula, a giant, vicious moth-like creature. Upon defeating him, Link frees the third of the Seven Maidens from her crystal prison.
