The Sail is an item from The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. This is needed in order to utilize the wind to rapidly sail across the Great Sea. The sail has only one real purpose; it propels the King of Red Lions forward with amazing speed if Link is heading the the direction that the wind is blowing. If Link attempts to go against the wind, then he goes slower and slower until there is virtually no movement. when Link attempts to use the Sail on land, he merely takes it out and displays it.

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.
After Link fails in his mission to rescue his sister Aryll from the Forbidden Fortress and is knocked down far away from the fortress, he awakens near Windfall Island aboard the King of Red Lions, a mysterious talking boat. After the King of Red Lions explains to Link about the great evil who resides in the fortress, Ganondorf, he asks Link to obtain a Sail for him, that they may sail across the sea to obtain the Pearls of the Goddesses and the Master Sword, needed to defeat Ganondorf. Link purchases the Sail from Zunari for 80 Rupees. According to Zunari, the Sail was the only part of his ship that survived the storm that occured when he traveled to the Great Sea. Using the Sail, Link and the King of Red Lions embark on their adventure.
