- "Crystallized salt from the ancient sea commonly used to season meals. Cannot be eaten in this form."
- — In-game description
Rock Salt is an item from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. It can be found by Link by breaking Ore Deposits with Remote Bombs, Bomb Arrows, or Hammers. Link can also purchase it from certain traveling merchants such as the butcher Mezer, from Giro in his campsite near the Hills of Baumer, from the Goron Gusto Shop in Goron City, or from the cooking ingredient vendor Spera in Gerudo Town. Cottla in Kakariko Village gives Rock Salt as a common reward for for winning games of Tag or Hide-and-seek.
It is possible to use it to season meals by adding it to a Cooking Pot with some ingredients to create interesting dishes such as Salt-Grilled Meat, Fish, Crab, Greens, or Mushrooms. Cooking it alone results in the failed food dish Dubious Food. It cannot be consumed in its raw form. Like Flint, it is a type of mineral ore though it is the only mineral ore that is commonly used in cooking as Flint is used primarily as a firestarter.
Related Side Quest
While in Kakariko Village when Koko is too busy cooking to play with Cottla, Link can offer to play with her in either a game of tag or hide-and-seek. Upon catching or finding Cottla before dinner time, she will reward Link with either Rock Salt or valuable Amber (the prize is random even during the side quest). Playing with her once will complete the side quest though Link can continue to play with her to receive more Rock Salt.
According to the in-game description, Rock Salt may be a reference to the Great Sea from The Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass. However it may rather be the reference to the "Ancient Sea" mentioned in Skyward Sword that became the Lanayru Sand Sea. Alternatively the ancient sea is unconnected to either of them and simply explains how Rock Salt can be found throughout Greater Hyrule.
