Link and Phoeni
|First appearance||Skyward Sword (2011)|
- "Oooooh... Somebody... Please, somebody help me... Oooh... Paper... Please... Somebody bring me paper... Bring me some paper... Any kind of paper at all... Ooooh..."
- — Phoeni
While at the Bazaar, Link hears that people in the Knight Academy have been hearing strange sounds emanating from the bathroom at night. If Link investigates the matter, he meets Phoeni, who is begging for paper. The next morning, Link finds Cawlin who asks him to deliver a love letter to Karane for him. Link, however, can choose to give the letter to either Karane or Phoeni. Should he bring it to Phoeni in the bathroom, Cawlin sinks into a state of depression. Despite this, Phoeni leaves the bathroom and Link can find her in Groose's room at night, caressing the sleeping Cawlin. The lovestruck ghost then produces five Gratitude Crystals.
According to an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Shigeru Miyamoto claimed that Phoeni and other similar beings in the Legend of Zelda series are based on Japanese ghost stories where a hand emerges from within the toilet and grabs the person sitting on it. Miyamoto claimed that these stories are "very scary."
As many residents of Skyloft seem to be named after birds, it is possible that Phoeni is named after the phoenix. If this is the case, she is the only character from Skyloft whose name is derived from a fictional bird rather than a real one.
