Link battling Phantom Ganon at the end of the Forest Temple.

In Ocarina of Time, Phantom Ganon is the boss of the Forest Temple.[7] Once the battle starts, Phantom Ganon jumps into one of the six paintings around the room. Afterwards, it and two replicas will ride to the front of three paintings. The real one can be spotted by its lighter color. A purple vortex then appears revealing the real Phantom Ganon.[8] As Phantom Ganon jumps out of the painting, Link can shoot it with the Fairy Bow. If the Arrow misses or is delayed, it summons an electric ball on the ground that scatters across the platform. This can be avoided by standing on one of the Triforce images on each corner of the platform. After three shots, Phantom Ganon leaves its horse, starting the second part of the battle.

Phantom Ganon now attacks by shooting an energy ball from its staff at Link while hovering over the ground. Link can hit the ball back with the Master Sword or a Bottle. After enough hits, Phantom Ganon falls to the ground paralyzed, where it can be hit multiple times with the Master Sword. When its health is halved, Phantom Ganon can also attack by twirling his staff a few times and then charging at Link, dealing three hearts of damage. Once defeated, he is banished to the gap between dimensions by Ganondorf[9] and Link receives a Heart Container as well as the Forest Medallion.

The Wind Waker[]

Phantom Ganon
Habitat: Forsaken Fortress
Effective Weapons: Light Arrows, Master Sword

This is a phantom that Ganondorf created in his own likeness. Use your sword to knock back the balls of magic that he hurls, then attack him when he's stunned.

Actually, you can also use empty bottles to deflect his magic attacks.

In The Wind Waker, Phantom Ganon appears in the Forsaken Fortress and in Ganon's Tower.[10] It must be defeated by reflecting its blue orbs with the Sword or an empty Bottle.[11][10] Once hit by a reflected attack, Link can attack Phantom Ganon with his Sword. He can also attack it by intercepting its Sword attacks. After defeating Phantom Ganon in the Forsaken Fortress, Link receives the Skull Hammer.[12]

During its fight in Ganon's Castle, Phantom Ganon is accompanied by four illusions of itself. It now also attacks by throwing dark energy balls, which splits into a group of small bursts of energy flying towards Link. These can be sent back at it with a Spin Attack. After just one hit, Phantom Ganon disappears, leaving its Sword behind with the handle pointing at the door Link must open to advance.[13] Once the Light Arrows are found, they must be shot at Phantom Ganon once stunned in order to finally defeat it.

Link can grab Phantom Ganon's Sword to attack; however, it must be hold with both hands, leaving Link unable to use his Shield. After defeating Phantom Ganon in Ganon's Castle's labyrinth, Link must throw its Sword at the brick wall to gain access to the top of the Tower.[14]

Four Swords Adventures[]

In Four Swords Adventures, Phantom Ganon first appears as the boss of Hyrule Castle. In order to defeat it, the Links must hit its energy balls back and forth with the Sword. Once stunned, it is vulnerable to slashes from the Sword. Phantom Ganon appears once again as the boss of the Temple of Darkness; however, it now summons clones to its aid. The real Phantom Ganon will throw green orbs that can be hit back, while the clones throw white balls that break when hit with the Sword.

Breath of the Wild[]

In Breath of the Wild, Windblight Ganon, Thunderblight Ganon, Fireblight Ganon, and Waterblight Ganon are all collectively known as Phantom Ganons.[5] They are Calamity Ganon's creations that he sent out to the Divine Beast, resulting in the death of the Champions.[15][16][17][18] When Link tries to activate the Main Control Unit of a Divine Beast, these Phantom Ganons will appear, and they must be defeated in order to continue.[19][20][21][22] When Link is victorious, a Heart Container will drop, and he will have access to the Main Control Unit.

Link can also dress up as the Phantom himself with the Phantom Ganon Set after completing the "EX Treasure: Dark Armor" Side Quest, which is exclusive to The Master Trials DLC Pack. The Phantom Ganon Set is comprised of the Phantom Ganon Skull, Phantom Ganon Armor, and Phantom Ganon Greaves. It is rumored that some believe this Armor Set is possessed by a dark entity resembling the Great King of Evil himself.[23][24][25][26] Each piece of the set grants Stealth Up and its has the same set bonus as the Radiant Set increasing the attack power of the Bokoblin Arm, Moblin Arm, and Lizalfos Arm bone Weapons. The Phantom Ganon Set also disguises Link from all Stal enemies, save for Stalnox and Cursed Enemies.

Hyrule Compendium Entry

XXX (XXX) Phantom Ganon
Description
A monster created from the very flesh and blood of Demon King Ganondorf that will follow his bidding without hesitation. Like the Demon King it so resembles, this huge creature is a master of many weapons. It will attack its foes relentlessly and without mercy.

Facing it in battle is inadvisable-unless you want a quick ticket to the afterlife.

Common Locations
Unknown
Recoverable Materials
Dark Clump

Phantom Ganon makes his first appearance as a boss in the series since Four Swords Adventures during the events of Tears of the Kingdom, being found in Hyrule Castle, the Great Deku Tree, and in other locations if the player defeats a group of Gloom Spawn. In this game, he resembles the mummified corpse form of Ganondorf seen at the beginning of the game, except made of Gloom. It is also shown to be Ganondorf’s seemingly only loyal servant that is loyal out of it’s own free will that was not created by Ganondorf, as it was shown to have served Ganondorf even before he became the Demon King.

Depending on its location, Phantom Ganon wields either the Gloom Club, Gloom Spear, or Gloom Sword, and all of them equipped with Demon King's Bow. They attack using these three weapons and can also teleport to in front of Link if there is an inaccessible zone in between them and Link, if they cannot, they'll use their bow. Also, if Link is on a platform that Phantom Ganon cannot get to, or has lose track on where Link is (hiding behind objects, using a Dazzlefruit) it can cover the floor and walls with gloom like it does in the Hyrule Castle fight, it will continue spreading up to a certain radius and will cancel out of it once it spots Link again or takes damage. Additionally, if Link stands too close to Gloom Club-wielding Phantom Ganons long enough after swinging their club, they'll kick Link.

Oddly enough, If Link attempts to repeatedly shoot arrows to Phantom Ganon's face rapidly enough, without using the bow airborne, sometimes the arrows won't damage him.

Like Gloom Spawn, if Link flees far enough (besides the Hyrule Castle sanctum boss), Phantom Ganon will despawn and leaves behind Dark Clumps. This counts as a kill and won't respawn until a blood moon occurs.

Phantom Ganon posed as Princess Zelda to cover for her disappearance during the Upheaval, doing things that were subtly uncharacteristic of the real Zelda such as banning any study of particular ruins at Kakariko Village, siccing the Sludge Like on King Dorephan and giving Yunobo a mask that enspells him and causes him to market the cursed Marbled Rock Roast. Once Yunobo is freed of the mask, the same disguised Phantom Ganon lures him and Link to the Fire Temple, pretending to be the Marbled Gohma's captive.

Scourge of the Deku Tree[]

Inside the Great Deku Tree, link will find Gloom Spawn, and after defeating them, Phantom Ganon will spawn. Link must defeat Phantom Ganon, resulting into the Deku Tree healing, and the Lost Woods no longer being covered in Purple Mist. When he is defeated, three Koroks will come down to see what is going on.

The Demon King's Phantom Saboteur[]

After Link awakened the four sages, Phantom Ganon, still posing as Zelda, lured Link to Hyrule Castle and ambushed him with groups of monsters multiple times before trapping him in the Sanctum. There, Ganondorf appeared and taunted Link, ordering Phantom Ganon to attack him before disappearing. In this fight, Phantom Ganon created multiple copies of himself to combat Link. When Link destroyed these, Phantom Ganon created another set of copies and attempted to fill the room with Gloom.

When Link defeated the second set of copies, Phantom Ganon vanished. Ganondorf reappeared and attacked Link with four tendrils of Gloom similar to the one he attacked him with beneath Hyrule Castle. This time, however, the four sages arrived and saved Link. Ganondorf then fled once again, as he had not yet regained his full power. Also once the player defeats Phantom Ganon then the false Zelda that speaks during every blood moon no longer appears, instead the cutscene plays with the music and no one speaking. It is also implied that this particular Phantom Ganon existed as far back as before Ganondorf became the Demon King, as he used its fake Zelda form in his assassination of Queen Sonia. Though the fake Zelda's deceit was uncovered and her attack on Sonia stopped, it was nonetheless distraction enough for Ganondorf himself to murder Sonia and steal her Secret Stone.

If Phantom Ganon isn’t defeated in Hyrule Castle, he appears after the temple bosses in Gloom’s Lair.

Other Appearances[]

Ocarina of Time (Himekawa)[]

Phantom Ganon appears in the Ocarina of Time Manga first appearing in Chapter 2: "The Sage of the Forest: Saria", answering Ganondorf's call to guard the Forest Temple and strike down the Hero of Time. When Link and Mido walk by a painting of Ganondorf, Phantom Ganon attacks. Despite a good fight, Phantom Ganon is defeated when Mido throws Link the Bow, defeating the specter of the King of Evil and releasing Saria from the painting.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl[]

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Phantom Ganon appears as a Sticker.

Hyrule Warriors Legends[]

In Hyrule Warriors Legends, Phantom Ganon appears as a Giant Boss, and as the main villain of the Wind Waker series of Scenarios in Legend Mode. He had stolen Cia's dark magic and the Triforce of Power from Lana, creating a new dimensional rift that summons the world from the Era of the Great Sea. He is eventually defeated by Link, Lana, Tetra, King Daphnes, and Cia.

In battle, Phantom Ganon wields his sword, which he uses for various spin attacks. He is able to vanish and reappear closer to enemy Warriors for a surprise spin attack, or alternately to create copies of himself to surround and attack the Warrior. His projectile attacks consist of raising both of his arms to create many homing energy balls, or to simply create a single white energy ball. The latter can be used to expose his Weak Point Gauge if bounced back at him by striking it. Phantom Ganon has no specific weakness to any item, and the only way to damage him is by reflecting his own attacks at him.

After his health has been reduced to about half, he summons a second sword and switches his battle style to melee, using the two blades to violently hack at the enemy Warrior. He also lowers his hovering altitude, making himself reachable to attack, but will always shield himself similarly to wind waker Ganondorf if attacked at the front or the sides. His backside, however, will become vulnerable to attack. After striking his back enough times, he will fall to the ground, exposing his Weak Point Gauge.

When defeated, Phantom Ganon will occasionally drop his Cape as a silver Material, and rarely, his Sword as a gold Material.

Trivia[]

  • In The Wind Waker, the Hylian script on Phantom Ganon's Sword reads "Zubora Gabora", the names of the blacksmiths who forge Link's Kokiri Sword in Majora's Mask.
  • The Wall Merging ability from A Link Between Worlds was inspired by Phantom Ganon from Ocarina of Time, who also has the ability to enter walls through paintings.[27]
    • In addition, his capturing of Saria in a painting would later be the main power of Yuga, Ganon's Lorulean counterpart.
  • Although Phantom Ganon himself does not appear, a concept art for Ganondorf in the Oracle games is described as representing "Ganondorf's phantom."[28]
  • Aside from Phantom Ganon's role in Hyrule Warriors, he was also given an indirect reference by Ganondorf in his second mission in the main campaign when the player is about to fight Impa.[29]
