The Nintendo DS (ニンテンドーDS Nintendō Dīesu?), often abbreviated to DS or NDS, is a dual-screen handheld video game console developed and manufactured by Nintendo. It was released in 2004 in Canada, the United States, and Japan. The console features a clamshell design, similar to the Game Boy Advance SP, with two LCD screens inside, with the bottom one being a touchscreen. The Nintendo DS also features a built-in microphone and supports Wi-Fi standards, allowing players to interact with each other within short range (10–30 m, depending on conditions) or online with the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service, which launched later in the console's lifespan. This was the first Nintendo console to be released in North America prior to Japan. Other versions of the NDS are the Nintendo DS Lite and the Nintendo DSi. The console comes in many different colors, including red, grey, and pink. Skins can be purchased to personalize the console.
Eventually, a new model of the Nintendo DS was conceptualized and created known as the Nintendo DSi, featuring bigger screens, a downloadable content service, and various other expansions. However, unlike the earlier DS and DS Lite versions of the console, it does not offer backward compatibility for Game Boy Advance games. This would recently be followed by the release of the Nintendo DSi XL, known as the Nintendo DSi LL in Japan.
