The Master Cycle Zero is a recurring Item in The Legend of Zelda series.[1][2] As part of the "EX The Champions' Ballad" Main Quest, it is revealed that the Hylian Champion can acquire a Divine Beast of his own through completing the trials given by Monk Maz Koshia. After defeating the monk as part of his final trial, he will award Link with the Master Cycle Zero, a Divine Beast created for the "true hero". Like the other Divine Beasts, it is modelled after an animal, specifically a Horse though unlike the other Divine Beasts it is much smaller in comparison and takes the form of a motorcycle with a horse motif. Due to its Horse design, certain characters like Konba identify it as such. Link can activate it via the Master Cycle Zero Rune which allows him to summon the Master Cycle Zero, though he is unable to do this in certain areas such as Gerudo Desert. Like a Horse, Link can mount and ride it, engage in mounted combat while riding it, and use it to run over enemies. However unlike Horses, it requires Fuel which can be produced by filling its tank with materials.

Location and Uses[]

Breath of the Wild[]

The Master Cycle Zero is a Rune obtained after defeating Monk Maz Koshia in the "EX The Champions' Ballad" Main Quest. In recognition of Link's accomplishments as the Hero of Hyrule Kingdom, Monk Maz Koshia summons the Guidance Stone housing the Master Cycle Zero Rune, allowing Link to claim his reward.[3] Monk Maz Koshia explains that the Master Cycle Zero was intended for the "one true hero,"[4] before returning him to the Great Plateau.[5]

After obtaining the Rune, the Master Cycle Zero will appear on the loading screen alongside the Divine Beasts. When Link returns to the Great Plateau, he is free to use the Master Cycle Zero across Hyrule Kingdom. The Master Cycle Zero runs on Fuel, which must be replenished by holding Materials and inserting them into the Master Cycle Zero's tank.[6][7] The Master Cycle Zero can be summoned almost anywhere, though there are a few locations where it cannot spawn,[6] such as the majority of Gerudo Desert and the burning areas of Eldin.

The Master Cycle Zero comes equipped with a headlight, which illuminates the path forward at night or in dark places. Link is capable of fighting while on the Master Cycle Zero, much like with Horse-based combat. When driven into enemies, the Master Cycle Zero will damage them. The Master Cycle Zero is capable of performing jumping actions known as Zero Jumps. Additionally, Link is immune to damage from falling while on the Master Cycle Zero; however, if Link is falling from a sufficient height, he would automatically dismount the Master Cycle Zero after falling for a certain amount of time. If the Master Cycle Zero is dropped into a body of water, it will disappear, requiring Link to summon it once more. If the Master Cycle Zero rams into a solid obstacle, it will disappear and Link will take a certain amount of damage, dependent on the Armor he is wearing. Link cannot register the Master Cycle Zero at a Stable, as it will disappear the moment he speaks to a Stable's owner. Link also cannot affix Octo Balloons to the Master Cycle Zero. No music plays when riding Master Cycle Zero.

If Link attempts to mount the Master Cycle Zero in a Footrace, he will be disqualified under the condition that it is a "Horse".[8]

Trivia[]

  • Series producer Eiji Aonuma wanted to add a motorcycle to Breath of the Wild as playing the game's massive world on a Horse reminded him of the first time he rode a motorcycle. However, the idea was originally rejected by the staff as they thought it would break the game. When looking for a reward after completing The Champions' Ballad DLC, Aonuma insisted again, finally getting the idea approved, with the programmers even buying a motocross bike in order to understand how it worked.[9]
  • The Master Cycle Zero originally had a wolf-based design but was changed as Link is always riding Horses in Breath of the Wild.[10]
  • As Monk Maz Koshia had stated that a Hylian Champion can acquire a Divine Beast (in this case, the Master Cycle Zero), it is the only one:
    • To not have been used during the first Great Calamity,
    • To not have been corrupted by Calamity Ganon during the second Great Calamity,
    • To be granted to Link a century after Ganon's attack on Hyrule while the Champion pilots got their Divine Beasts earlier after they completed their trials.
  • Visually, the Master Cycle Zero resembles a Unicorn, a mythological horse hybrid.
