"That is the Mask of Scents, isn't it? You've done well to get that mask. Looking at its condition, I can tell that its previous owner was neat and tidy."
Happy Mask Salesman

The Mask of Scents is one of the twenty-four masks that Link can collect in The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. It enhances the wearer's sense of smell; specifically, when worn it allows Link to sense the odor emanating from Magic Mushrooms, indicated by purple fumes on-screen, and store them in bottles for later use. The mask is an exact match for Link's skin color, making it appear as if the mask is part of his face when worn.

Story Edit

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Link obtains the Mask of Scents from the Deku Butler, after managing to keep up with him during his flight through the Deku Shrine. It serves as a belated reward from the Deku Royal Family for having saved the Deku Princess from Woodfall Temple earlier. When presenting the mask to Link, he apologizes for making the race overly challenging; reminded of his lost son when seeing Link's Deku form, he tells him that his son once had a similar mask, implied to be the very same one.

Origin Edit

Theory warning: This section contains theoretical information based on the research of one or several other users. It has not been officially verified by Nintendo and its factual accuracy is disputed.

The Mask of Scents is believed to be a reference to Pigma Dengar from the Star Fox series; both are pigs and have black around the eyes, though Pigma lacks the tusks that the Mask of Scents has. It is one of five masks that are a supposed reference to Star Fox, along with the Bremen Mask, the Bunny Hood, Don Gero's Mask, and the Keaton Mask.

The mask may also be shaped like a pig because pigs can be used to smell and find truffles, a type of subterranean mushroom.

Theory warning: Theories end here.
