The Magic Hammer as it appears in-game

Despite its name, the Magic Hammer holds seemingly no enchantment or magical properties. It is found in the first dungeon in the Dark World, the Palace of Darkness.

It must be used in order to break the metal plating protecting the face of the dungeon's boss; the Helmasaur King. Aside from smashing enemies, it can be used to smash various pegs that block certain paths around Hyrule. Unlike the hammers of the three-dimensional Legend of Zelda games, the weapon is rather fast, but has a very poor range. When used on an enemy frozen with the Ice Rod or Ether Medallion, a Magic Decanter usually appears. This item fully restores Link's Magic Meter.

[edit] The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures

The Magic Hammer can be found randomly on item podiums while traveling through Hyrule. It can smash objects and hammer down stumps blocking Link's way. If Link builds up power by holding the Magic Hammer above his head, he can smash it down with great force, temporarily stunning any nearby enemies.

If Link meets a Great Fairy, it can upgrade his Magic Hammer to the Lvl. 2 Magic Hammer. It is identical to the Lvl. 1 Magic Hammer, except that it produces a much larger shockwave when Link charges his attack.
