"Hey! Blast you for waking me from my deep, dark sleep! ...I mean, thanks a lot, sir! But now I will get my revenge on you. Get ready for it! ...Err, is that OK with you, sir?"
— Mad Batter

The Mad Batter is a recurring character in the Legend of Zelda series. A seemingly insane bat-demon, the Mad Batter is often imprisoned in magical fountains for causing trouble. The Mad Batter can be released from imprisonment by sprinkling Magic Powder on his "prison." Immediately upon release, the Mad Batter threatens to curse Link for releasing him. In truth, the "revenge" that the Mad Batter exacts is always beneficial for Link.

Appearances

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

"Heh heh heh! I laugh at your misfortune! Now your magic power will drop by one half! Congratulations! Now, do your best, even though I'm sure it won't be enough! Have a nice day! See you!"
— Mad Batter
Mad Batter (A Link to the Past)

The Mad Batter is imprisoned in a cave near the Dwarven Swordsmiths' Smithery in the Light World; it can only be entered by slamming a wooden peg into the ground with the Magic Hammer. By jumping off a cliff into a well, Link finds himself in a strange room with a green ornamental fountain. Link releases the Mad Batter from its imprisonment with Magic Powder, causing it to appear and threaten to take its revenge. The Mad Batter engulfs Link in a blinding flash of light. After it has gone away, Link's magic power will drop by 1/2 normal consumption whenever a magic-depleting item is used. The Mad Batter seems to take malicious delight in knowing that Link now has more magic power.

The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening

"Hey, Kid! You woke me up from a fine nap!! ...Thanks a lot! But now, I'll get my revenge! Are you ready?!"
— Mad Batter
Mad Batter (Link's Awakening)

The Mad Batter can be found in three separate locations on Koholint Island: the Mysterious Woods, near Martha's Bay, and on the Tal Tal Mountain Range. When Link sprinkles some Magic Powder on the well in which it is imprisoned, it appears and threatens to curse Link. Link is given three options (depending on whether or not he has the items beforehand) as far as his "revenge" is concerned; Link can carry either more Magic Powder, more Bombs, or more Arrows. Not only does he allow Link to carry more of an item, but he also provides Link with items up to the new limit given. The Mad Batter laughs at Link, who now has "more junk to carry" and disappears from sight.

Spoiler warning: Spoilers end here.

Etymology

It is likely that the Mad Batter is named after the Mad Hatter, a potentially crazy character from Lewis Carroll's classic story, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.
