The phases of the moon are part of a quest from The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. Modeled after the real-world moon's rotation around Earth, Link uses the lunar cycle found inside the Ghost Ship Chart to track the Ghost Ship across the Great Sea in his search for the eight shards of the Triforce. The lunar phases are also critical in obtaining Legendary Pictographs from Lenzo.
When the moon appears as a right-facing crescent, the Ghost Ship Chart indicates that the Ghost Ship can be found at the Five-Star Isles. Link may also purchase a Legendary Pictograph of Fado for 50 Rupees (150 in Wind Waker HD) during this phase.
When the moon is growing from the first quarter, but not quite a full moon, it becomes a waxing gibbous, during which time the Ghost Ship can be found sailing near Greatfish Isle. A Legendary Pictograph of Daphnes Nohansen Hyrule becomes available to Link at this time as well.
When the moon is shrinking from a full moon before becoming the last quarter, it becomes a waning gibbous, at which time the Ghost Ship will appear at Diamond Steppe Island. A Legendary Pictograph of a Great Fairy is also available during the waning gibbous.
