- "You know about the Like Like, right? It eats whatever you're carrying. You'd better defeat it if you want your stuff back."
- — Tatl
Like Likes are cylindrical monsters with the ability to suck in something as big as a human and consume items that their prey carried. They especially love shields and tunics, considering them a delicacy, though they will leave the devoured item if killed shortly after eating it. Their first appearance is in The Legend of Zelda, where they are seen to have a fondness for eating Link's Magical Shield. Like Likes appear in later versions of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, in a single room in the Palace of the Four Swords and outside the Shield Shop in the dark world. As in other Zelda games, the Like Likes in A Link to the Past steal Link's shield. Like Likes do not appear anywhere else in this game. If Link has not succesfully defeated a Like Like that has stolen his shield before some time has passed, the Like Like will escape with the shield.
Like Likes are generally yellowish in color and dissolve into a puddle when killed; some come in different colors, and sometimes they simply disappear when killed. Like Likes have been found in Hyrule, Koholint Island, Termina, Holodrum, and Labrynna.
Their name's origin is suggested in a Hylian proverb, which states that "shield eaters and world leaders have many likes alike."
[edit] Rupee Like
Rupee Likes are a new species of Like Like, and are found in The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords, The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures, The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass and The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap. The Rupee Like dangles a Rupee or a Force gem above its body like an angler fish. It lies in wait completely invisible, looking merely like a single red, blue, or green Rupee lying on the ground, but if the player touches the Rupee or swings their sword or throws their boomerang or does any other action that would normally collect the Rupee, the Rupee Like strikes. When it swallows the player it slowly sucks Rupees out of them. The amount taken is determined by the color of the Rupee on the Rupee Like (green 1, blue 5, red 20) If the player kills the Rupee Like, they get the Rupee the Rupee Like was dangling, and can also recover some of the Rupees that were eaten. Link can also use the Pegasus Boots to grab the Rupee before the Rupee Like has time to emerge from the ground.
In Minish Cap, the Hyrule town library contains a book entitled Learn to Like Your Like Like: A Good Guide to a Bad Pet.
[edit] Deku Like
These Like Likes are found in The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. They are immobile and if Link jumps over them, they will swallow him and spit him back out.
