[edit] Theory

Theory warning: This section contains theoretical information based on the viewpoints or research of one or several other users. It has not been officially verified by Nintendo and its factual accuracy is disputed.

Some believe that King Gustaf could possibly be the Hero of Men referred to in the story of the War of the Bound Chest due to his statement that he ruled Hyrule "countless ages ago", and seemed to be an influential and well-respected person even to such isolated groups as the Wind Tribe. This is in no way proven, but it remains a possibility given King Gustaf's mysterious background and his particular appearance within the story of The Minish Cap over other former rulers of Hyrule.

This theory is also compounded by the fact that it was King Gustaf that possessed the key to getting to the Cloud Tops and thus to the Wind Element stored within the Palace of Winds. It is also stated in the figurine description of his descendant, King Daltus, that Daltus was a great swordsman in his youth, fighting to a draw with Smith in the Picori Festival sword-fighting tournament many years prior to The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap. If swordsmanship runs in Daltus' family, Gustaf may also have been a very competent swordsman, which the Hero of Men was noted to have been. This would mirror another instance in the Zelda series where a former Hero returns from the grave to assist the new Hero in defeating the evil plaguing Hyrule, that instance being the appearance of the Hero's Shade in The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, who is widely believed to be the spirit of the Hero of Time who wrote his name into legend in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

It would also be fitting that the Hero of Men was possibly made King of Hyrule as a reward for his efforts in saving the new kingdom from the Army of Evil. It is also fitting being that the Princess of Hyrule henceforth inherited the Light Force following the end of the War of the Bound Chest, which would be in keeping with the Hero of Men becoming a member of the Royal Family at the end of the war. This would mean that after the Hero's death, the Light Force passed from him and on to his descendants, the Princesses of Hyrule.

It is also interesting to note that the Bound Chest and the Picori Blade were in the possession of the Royal Family as well, meaning that both of the Hero's tools used in the war (the Picori Blade and the Light Force) resided in one way or another with the Royal Family of Hyrule. All of these facts point to the Hero being in some way connected to the Royal Family.
