At the outset of the battle, Link must destroy its protective ice barrier with blasts from the Fire Rod while dodging chunks of ice that fall from above. After its protection is gone, Kholdstare splits into three and moves about the arena. Link can then begin to attack Kholdstare directly, hitting each of the three monocled clouds about four times with his sword.
Interestingly, Kholdstare bears a striking resemblance to Frostare from The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures.
