[edit] Biography

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

After being released from his imprisonment, Ganondorf attacks Greatfish Isle in order to seize Nayru's Pearl and kill the Sea Spirit. Jabun manages to escape, but Greatfish Isle is destroyed by Ganondorf's wicked magic. Jabun retreats to a shelter in a cave on Outset Island, and seals the cavern with a mighty stone doorway. During Ganondorf's Endless Night, Link obtains Bombs from Tetra's Pirate Ship and blasts open the doorway to the cavern, finding Jabun inside. Lord Jabun speaks, in ancient Hylian (a language that was commonly used at the time of Ocarina of Time), to the King of Red Lions (although Link is able to understand ancient Hylian in the Second Quest). Jabun questions the King of Red Lions as to the status of his search for a new hero as well as the descendant of Princess Zelda, and on the assurances of the King of Red Lions that Link has the potential to take up the stead of the ancient Hero of Time, Jabun agrees to give them the final pearl (housed inside the lantern he carries on top of his head) needed to open the way to the Master Sword at the bottom of the sea via raising the Tower of the Gods from the ocean's depths. This is also the only pearl Link obtains without completing a dungeon in order to retrieve it.

[edit] Theory

Theory warning: This section contains theoretical information based on the viewpoints or research of one or several other users. It has not been officially verified by Nintendo and its factual accuracy is disputed.

Jabun is stated to be Lord Jabu-Jabu by Prima's Guide for The Wind Waker, meaning that he returned to the land of Hyrule following the Hero of Time's departure back to the past and that he survived the Great Flood, taking on the name Jabun once the Great Sea was formed. In his role as Lord Jabu-Jabu, he was the patron deity of the Zora race and was a water spirit in Hyrule's earlier history. Ganondorf cast a curse upon Lord Jabu-Jabu in retribution for the Zoras refusing to cooperate with his schemes far in the past, long before the Great Flood. This prompted the Hero of Time himself to enter Jabu-Jabu and break the curse on the water spirit. After the Great Cataclysm, Jabu-Jabu vanished from his home in Zora's Fountain (thought to perhaps be the site of Greatfish Isle at the time of The Wind Waker) and was not seen by the Hero of Time in the future age of his adventure to save Hyrule, suggesting he had either gone into hiding somewhere or had fled the kingdom to escape Ganondorf's rule. Jabun's confirmation as Lord Jabu-Jabu, combined with the general consensus that The Wind Waker takes place in what is called the "Adult Timeline," implies that Jabu-Jabu returned after Ganondorf's defeat but took on the name of Jabun after Hyrule was flooded to stop Ganondorf's resurgence.
