Ikana Canyon is a location from The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. It is a section of the Ikana region in the land of Termina. Ikana Canyon once held a mighty and proud civilization built with the blood and bones of many fierce wars long ago, but when Link visits it, it is a wasteland swarming with the undead. The region has been cursed making deceased bodies return to life and suffer once again. In fact, there are only three known living people in the canyon: Pamela, her father, and Sakon (whether or not the Poe Salesman is alive is unspecified). The lack of vegetation and top soil, combined with the lack of shade from the sun, makes Ikana Canyon one of the most inhospitable areas in Termina. It's close association with the paranormal has prevented recolonization (for the most part), and most people in Termina are too terrified to get close.

[edit] Geography

The Canyon is split into two distinct sections: the top of the canyon, where most of the points of interest are, and the valley below.

[edit] Canyon Floor

The bottom of the Canyon contains a river flowing into the Southern Swamp, as well as a Business Scrub and the Hideout of Sakon the thief.

Unlike the top of the Canyon, the bottom is primarily grassy and is home solely to Octoroks. Ice Arrows and a Hookshot are required to access anything beyond the Canyon bottom.

[edit] Canyon Top

The top of Ikana Canyon is the closest thing comparable to a city in Termina's eastern region, and indeed was once Ikana's royal capital. Now, however, it is completely barren, save for a couple of weeds. Very few things live here; the most common inhabitants are Guays. Amongst the city's abandoned huts are many notable landmarks, the most prominent one being the Ancient Castle of Ikana, from which the Ikana Royal Family once ruled over the region. On the opposite side of the city is a hole leading into the Gibdo Well. Against the wall opposite the canyon is the Spirit House, the residence of the Poe Sisters and the Poe Salesman. Also, the Spring Water Cave and a colossal tower holding the fourth and final dungeon, Stone Tower Temple, home to the evil demons Twinmold, are found in the area.

A secluded hut next to the Ancient Castle of Ikana holds the final Great Fairy Fountain.

The most noticeable building at the top of the canyon is the Music Box House, which plays music when powered by the canyon's springwater. This is where Pamela and her father live.

[edit] Story

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

When Link arrives in Ikana Canyon, he finds that the dead bodies of the Royal Family, as well as all their subordinates, have been cursed and forced to linger in the land of the living as undead monsters. The Ikana Royal Family and army exist as skeletons similar to the Stalfos and Stalchilds from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, the staff of Ikana Castle remain as ReDead, citizens of the village exist as Gibdos, and the kingdom's Royal Composers Sharp and Flat are forced to exist as Poes. Enemy spies from an enemy kingdom also have been revived as Garo Robes.

Spoiler warning: Spoilers end here.

[edit] Trivia

  • The buildings and Ikana Castle all have architecture reminiscent of Native American structures, particularly the Mesoamericans.
  • Early on in the eastern segment of the game, the Ikana Canyon area is alternatively referred to as "Ikana Hill". However, the game does not specify whether the hill is the city or if the entire canyon area sits on the hill.
  • Curiously, the map for Ikana Canyon and the surrounding area is labeled by Tingle as being a map of Stone Tower specifically.
