- "Since the olden days, this sword has been used to fend off evil... Its blade is infused with the desire to become strong and righteous. Be strong, Link."
- — Orca
The Hero's Sword is a sword from The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. Orca gives Link this sword on Outset Island after he completes basic sword training. It appears to be a Gladius. The sword allows him to cut down the saplings blocking the path to the Forest of Fairies, where Tetra falls after the Helmaroc King drops her. In the Forsaken Fortress, Link manages to lose his sword when launched out of Tetra's Pirate Ship, forcing him to utilize stealth and whatever weapons he can find until he recovers the sword. Once Link obtains the Master Sword, it replaces the Hero's Sword in his inventory. However, when Link departs from Outset at the end of the game, the sword is seen strapped to his back, hinting that he may have kept it with him throughout his journey. Since the Master Sword is wedged into Ganondorf's forehead, he returned to using the old sword.
To obtain the Hero's Sword, Link must complete Orca's basic sword training. Mastering the training requires Link to display all facets of swordplay successfully. Once Orca realizes that a girl had fallen into the Forest of Fairies on Outset Island, he trusts Link with the sword to help him against the many evils he will face in his quest.
Interestingly, the Broken Sword given to Link by the Elderly Zora in The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages is referred to as the "Hero's Sword". Despite being called the Broken Sword everywhere else, the Elderly Zora says "This is the Hero's Sword that a great hero gave my ancestors long ago!" when he hands Link the item.
