The Hero's Sword is a sword from The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. Orca gives Link this sword on Outset Island after he completes basic sword training. The sword allows him to cut down the saplings blocking the path to the forest found on the island, where Tetra lands after the Helmaroc King drops her. In the Forsaken Fortress, Link manages to lose his sword when launched out of Tetra's ship, forcing him to utilize stealth and whatever weapons he can find until he recovers the sword. Once Link obtains the Master Sword, it replaces the Hero's Sword in his inventory.
To obtain the sword, Link must complete Orca's basic sword training. Mastering the training requires Link to display all facets of swordplay successfully. Once Orca realizes that Link's sister, Aryll, has been kidnapped and that another girl has been dropped into the forest on Outset Island, he trusts Link with the sword to help him against the many evils he will face in his quest.
