— In-game description in Ocarina of Time

Hearts are the unit of measurement for health in the Legend of Zelda series, with the exception of Zelda II: The Adventure of Link.

When Link touches a Heart, it refills one Heart Container. Link normally starts his adventure with three Hearts, the exception being four in the Linked Game of Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons. Hearts can be found in the grass, in trees, after a monster is slain, and even in some shops.

When Link is injured, a number of Hearts or fractions of one is depleted from his total. When Link runs out of Hearts, he gets a Game Over. Different monsters drain different amounts of Hearts, from a fourth of a Heart to more than three full Hearts. In some games, Link can receive an upgrade to his defense, resulting in a white border to be added to the hearts shown onscreen and cutting the damage Link takes in half.

There are many ways to restore depleted Hearts; for example, finding Hearts in the places mentioned above, using a Fairy to restore hearts (the number varies from game to game), drinking a Red Potion, which restores various numbers of Hearts depending on the game, Great Fairy Tears to restore all of his Hearts, various soups for varying amounts, Lon Lon Milk, or an apple.
