Pieces of Heart are smaller pieces of a full Heart Container. By collecting the necessary number of Pieces of Heart, Link can create a new Heart Container and thus increase his health meter. Usually the number to be acquired is four, although in The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess it takes five pieces to make a Heart Container.
Heart Pieces are found in mostly every Zelda game starting with The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and they are found in many different places throughout the game. They are either hidden in hard to reach places that need tools you find later in the game, in treasure chests within dungeons or the overworld, or by helping someone with a deed. In some games, they can also be purchased in shops. Heart pieces are usually part of the side quests in a game and are not necessary to completing the game. They are conspicuously absent in The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass. They also do not appear in The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords and The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures due to radically different gameplay.
