Biography
Edit
Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.
Gaepora is the keeper of Skyloft's legends and lore, meaning he is one of the chosen few who knows the secrets of the Goddess Sword and The Surface. His outfit greatly resembles that of Rauru's from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and he is the one who sends Link to The Surface to rescue Zelda.
Because Gaepora is the keeper of Skyloft's legends and lore, Link has to talk to him at the Knight Academy on a number of occasions, depending on Link's current objective. This includes information concerning the "Ballad of the Goddess", a clue that will point Link to the Isle of Songs, and the Triforce.
Interestingly, if Link enters the Knight Academy via the chimney using the Clawshots at night, he may discover that Gaepora is the one taking a bath by looking through a grate in the bathroom's ceiling. Gaepora's bathing is what is preventing Karane from taking one herself.
In the epilogue, Gaepora is briefly reunited with Zelda at the Sealed Temple.
Spoiler warning: Spoilers end here.
Etymology
Edit
In an interview with Nintendo Power, Eiji Aonuma has stated that Gaepora was always planned to be knowledgeable and wise (he was originally going to be a priest that was heir to the legend of the goddess), so the designer based his model after this. His coincidental resemblance to Kaepora Gaebora made them choose the name Gaepora. This also continues the trend of residents of Skyloft being named after birds, particularly the owl motif that the instructors of the Knight Academy seem to share.
