Red Bubbles are recurring enemies in the Legend of Zelda series. Similar to the numerous other variations, they are flying skulls wreathed in red flames that attack Link by flying or bouncing into him, catching him on fire and causing damage.

[edit] Appearances

[edit] The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask

Red Bubbles occasionally spring out of fire or lava whenever Link gets close. Once they're out and about, they will bounce wildly around the area until they are defeated, or retreat into the lava again. They appear most prominently in the Fire Temple and Ganon's Castle, although it briefly appears in the Shadow Temple and the Spirit Temple. Red Bubbles in Majora's Mask are identical to their Ocarina of Time counterparts. They will spring out of molten lava to attack Link when he approaches. They only appear in the Snowhead Temple.

In both of these appearances, the Red Bubble can be defeated by the sword, the Fairy Slingshot (Ocarina of Time), or the Fairy Bow (Hero's Bow in Majora's Mask). They can also be stunned momentarily with Hookshot in both games, and with the Boomerang and Longshot in Ocarina of Time.

Red Bubbles will float around casually until they take notice of Link. After spotting Link, they give off menacing cackles and tirelessly stalk Link until he gets too far ahead, at which time they lose interest. Their flames can be put out with the Deku Leaf, which will turn them into harmless, idle skulls, at which point Link can slay them with his sword. If they are left to themselves for too long, they will recover and rekindle themselves. The Hero's Bow is the best way to defeat Red Bubbles, as one hit will instantly defeat one, although the sword (two strikes with the Hero's Sword or one with the Master Sword) will also defeat them. The Boomerang, despite its capacity for taking out small flying foes in the game, does not damage or stun the Red Bubble whatsoever. Red bubbles in Phantom Hourglass are virtually the same as they are in The Wind Waker. The main differences is that in Phantom Hourglass, they do not actively chase him and instead fly in random, chaotic patterns around a room.
