For the boss of the same name appearing in Four Swords Adventures, see Big Poe (Boss).

Big Poes are recurring Enemies in The Legend of Zelda series.[1] They are a larger, stronger variant of Poes. Like Poes, they carry Poe Souls within the lanterns that they carry.

Characteristics[]

Ocarina of Time[]

Navi's Comment
Navi says:

Big Poe
This Poe won't disappear even if you stare at it. It moves fast despite its size!

A total of 10 Big Poes haunt specific areas of Hyrule Field in Ocarina of Time. They appear while riding on Epona, as crossing their spawn point on foot will often trigger a normal Poe. Big Poe appearances can also be randomly triggered while on foot. However, due to their fast movement, it is advised to chase them while on horseback. When Link spots one, it will run away from him,[2] so he must quickly defeat it with Arrows. After being defeated, they can be Bottled and sold to the Poe Collector.[3][4][5] Capturing and selling all ten of them will earn Link another empty Bottle.[6]

Majora's Mask

You know about the Big Poe, right? Knock it back to stop it, then take your shot!

Only two Big Poes appear in Majora's Mask, one in the Ikana Graveyard, and the other Beneath the Well. The Big Poe in Ikana Graveyard can only be fought on the Final Day once Link has obtained the Captain's Hat and commanded the Stalchildren guarding the grave to break it open. Below the grave lies a chamber that is connected to Dampé's home.

Every night, Dampé travels down to this chamber in search of the Royal Family's legendary treasure, but is unable to efficiently navigate it because of how dark it is.[7] If Link visits the chamber and agrees to guide the gravekeeper using Tatl's light, the young hero may lead him to patches of dirt which either contain nothing or blue flames. If Link manages to uncover three blue flames, they will converge and form a Big Poe, scaring Dampé back into his home. If this Big Poe is defeated, a Treasure Chest will appear, hosting an empty Bottle. In Majora's Mask 3D, this was changed to a Piece of Heart instead.

The Big Poe located Beneath the Well appears in one of the rooms to challenge Link. Auspiciously, a Big Poe Soul is one of the items requested by the Gibdos within the well.

Four Swords Adventures[]

Main article: Big Poe (Boss)

In Four Swords Adventures, a singular Poe, known as the Big Poe, appears as the boss of The Swamp and Infiltration of Hyrule Castle stages under two distinct forms reminiscent of Jalhalla, the boss of the Earth Temple from The Wind Waker. These forms serve as a disguise for its true self, which is nothing more than a small green Poe. The Big Poe is defeated by lighting four torches that make it vulnerable. It is capable of spawning normal Ghinis.

Other Appearances[]

Big Poe in Hyrule Warriors

In Hyrule Warriors, Big Poes appear as Captains, often being found in the ranks of the Dark Forces. They resemble their Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask counterparts, having similar clothing and colors, though also looking more humanoid than their original design. To attack, Big Poes swing their Lanterns and also expel dark elemental magic from it, which will also cause their Weak Point Gauge to be revealed. They have a proclivity for dodging attacks by vanishing and reappearing a short distance away.

In "The Sheikah Tribesman", a special Big Poe, known as the Spirit of the Caves,[8] guards the tunnel gate, preventing the Hyrulean Forces from escaping. The Spirit of the Caves must be defeated in order to open the passageway leading out of the Eldin Caves.

In certain Adventure Mode battles, a named variant called a Hylian Ghost also appears. A Hylian Captain will become injured and must be safely escorted to the Allied Base.[9] If he is allowed to fall in battle, he will reappear as a Hylian Ghost and seek revenge by cursing the Allied Forces and making a faction of them retreat.[10] If the ghost is allowed to stay on the battlefield, he will continuously curse the Allied Forces, such as decreasing their Rupee count.[11] Defeating him stops any more curses from happening.

When defeated, Big Poes may drop Big Poe Necklaces and Big Poe's Lanterns as their Bronze and Silver Materials, respectively.
