Template:Character Gulley is a character in A Link Between Worlds. He is the son of the Blacksmith, and one of the Seven Sages.

Biography

Gulley and Link know each other well prior to events of A Link Between Worlds. Gulley visits Link frequently to wake him up in the morning,[1] because Link is often late for work.[2]

Gulley is trapped inside a painting by Yuga shortly after Link battles Yuga in the Eastern Palace. Link meets the Blacksmith's Wife, Gulley's mother, south of Kakariko Village as she is looking for Gulley.[3] Instead of finding Gulley, Link and the Blacksmith's Wife find a pouch that Gulley had intended to give to Link as a gift.

After Yuga obtains the Triforce of Power, Gulley's painting is hidden inside the Dark Palace. Link rescues Gulley after defeating Gemesaur King. Gulley is very young; he is aware of his powers as a sage, but does not fully understand what it means to be one of the seven sages (he refers to the group of sages repeatedly as "sevensages").[4]

Gulley remains in the Chamber of Sages until the Triforce is returned to Hyrule. He then returns home.

Ancestry

Gulley could be considered the Sage of Forest, taking into account his Kokiri-like appearance, his association with the color green, and his fondness for the woods and animals. Given his favorite place to go to, the tree stump in the center of the Haunted Grove, it is possible that he and his family descend from the Flute Boy in Template:ALTTP. While at first it would seem unlikely he would be of Kokiri descent given his human status, it is also possible that the changing or mixing of races (as seen with the Koroks and the Rito of The Wind Waker) could still indicate a possible descent from Saria, the Sage of Forest during the Era of the Hero of Time.

Trivia

  • Gulley's Japanese name グリ(Guri) is derived from green. Green writes グリーン(gurīn) in Japanese.
  • A gulley is a type of ravine, canyon or gorge.
  • Gulley's visual design is based on the Flute Boy from A Link to the Past.
