[edit] Biography

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Prior to the events of the game, Malladus ruled over New Hyrule, and the inhabitants of the land lived in fear. Eventually, a rebellion broke out and the spirits of the land helped the inhabitants defeat Malladus. Despite this, nobody had enough power to kill the being, and the people could only muster enough strength and energy to subdue him with chains and shackles and bury him underground. The shackles, extending the land of New Hyrule in four different directions, became the Spirit Tracks, and the surrounding community used these tracks as transportation railways.

During the game, Chancellor Cole kills Princess Zelda and uses her body as a vessel in an attempt to revive Malladus. To stop him, Link must ascend the Tower of Spirits which has been broken apart into segments, and secure the Stone Maps, to prevent the removal of the Spirit Tracks which imprisoned Malladus.

At the midway point in the game, Malladus is revived in Zelda's body. Byrne demands that he be given the power he desires for freeing Malladus, but Malladus simply attacks Byrne and then escapes to the Dark Realm with Cole, via the Demon Train.

Later on in the game Link, Zelda, Anjean and Byrne, who is now working against Malladus, reach the Dark Realm. Link and Zelda, in a Phantom Guardian's body, fight Chancellor Cole while Zelda tries to reach Malladus. When Zelda reaches Malladus, she grabs him, giving Link the opportunity to shoot him with a Light Arrow. The Demon Train is then destroyed and Zelda is reunited with her body. Malladus then consumes Chancellor Cole and possesses his body, transforming it into a giant, boar-like beast. After a final battle, Link stabs the crystal on Malladus' forehead that was created during the fight, shattering it. Light begins to shine from within Malladus' body, destroying both his spirit and Chancellor Cole.

Spoiler warning: Spoilers end here.

[edit] Etymology

Malladus' name is possibly based on a famous type of European steam engine: the Mallard. This seems probable due to the fact that many characters in Spirit Tracks are named in relation to trains.
