Background & History

Era of the Great Flood

King Daphnes was the reigning King of Hyrule when the evil Ganondorf escaped from his centuries of imprisonment in the Sacred Realm, where he had been sealed by the Seven Sages following his defeat by the Hero of Time. King Daphnes was powerless to stop Ganondorf's reign of terror. To make matters worse, due to Princess Zelda having used the Ocarina of Time to send the Hero of Time back to relive his stolen childhood, a hero did not appear to stop Ganondorf after he had escaped. With little hope of defeating the King of Evil without the strength of the hero, King Daphnes and the people of Hyrule prayed to the Goddesses. The Goddesses answered their prayers by directing the people of Hyrule to take shelter in the mountains of Hyrule, before flooding the land of Hyrule, to seal away Ganondorf and his forces within Hyrule itself.

To prevent Ganondorf from obtaining the entire Triforce of Wisdom, King Daphnes entrusted a piece of the Triforce of Wisdom to his descendants while he held on to the remaining piece. Either out of guilt and/or a divine mission assigned to him by the gods, King Daphnes stood watch over Hyrule and the seal on Ganondorf.

Era of the Great Sea

Eventually, Ganondorf managed to escape to the Great Sea, though most of his forces remained sealed in Hyrule. Ganondorf sent Helmaroc King to kidnap Hylian girls in his search for the current incarnation of Zelda, who he believed would possesses the Triforce of Wisdom, apparently unaware that it had been split in two years earlier.

Determined to prevent Ganondorf's return and protect the Great Sea from his evil, King Daphnes took the form of boat, known as the King of Red Lions and went off in search of the current incarnation of the Hero. After the Hero ends up being thrown from Forsaken Fortress by Helmaroc King, following a failed attempt to rescue his kidnapped sister, the King of Red Lions rescued him and took him to Windfall Island. After the boy came too, he explained that Ganon was the one who commanded the bird and convinced the boy that he must defeat Ganon in order to save his sister and the other girls kidnapped by Helmaroc King. Acting as the boy's sailboat, the King of Red Lions guided the boy on his quest. Upon arriving on Dragon Roost Island, the King of Red Lions gave the boy the legendary Wind Waker baton, which King Daphnes had used in the past to conduct the Sages of the Master Sword. Together they traveled across the Great Sea to obtain the Pearls of the Goddesses that had been entrusted to Valoo, Great Deku Tree, and Jabun. The Pearls allowed them to summon the Tower of the Gods which served as a test for the boy. After he had proved his worth, the boy and King of Red Lions traveled beneath the Great Sea, to the submerged Hyrule Castle, where the boy obtained the Master Sword which was required to defeat Ganon, despite the fact that removing it would remove the seal on Ganondorf's Forces within Hyrule.

However unbeknownst to King Daphnes, Ganondorf had sent Jalhalla and Molgera to kill the Sage of Earth Laruto and Sage of Wind Fado, causing the Master Sword to lose the power to repel evil, rendering the blade useless against Ganondorf. Fortunately, the boy and Tetra were saved by the intervention of Valoo and the Rito. The King of Red Lions transport the boy and Tetra to Hyrule Castle, leading them to the Master Sword's hidden chamber. There he revealed his true identity and that Tetra was the current incarnation of Princess Zelda and descendant of the Royal Family of Hyrule. Leaving Zelda in the Master Sword's hidden chamber, King Daphnes and the boy returned to the Great Sea to learn why the Master Sword had lost the power to repel evil and after learn Fado and Laruto had been killed, they searched the Great Sea for their successors in order to restore power to the Master Sword. After restoring power to the Master Sword, the King of Red Lions told the boy to seek out the pieces of the Triforce of Courage. Once the boy had obtained the Triforce of Courage, the King of Red Lions gave the boy the title, Hero of Winds and the two returned to Hyrule to defeat Ganondorf.

They soon discovered that Ganondorf and his forces had located Tetra in the Master Sword's hidden chamber and captured her along with the complete Triforce of Wisdom she held in her possession.

The Hero of Winds eventually confronted Ganondorf atop his tower, but was subdued by the evil tyrant, who took their Triforce pieces to combine them into the complete Triforce. However Ganondorf's chance to have his desires finally fulfilled was stolen by King Daphnes, who touched to complete Triforce and wished that the Kingdom of Hyrule be flooded completely and for both the Hero of Winds and Tetra to have a future. Ganondorf is eventually defeated by combined efforts of the Hero of Winds and Tetra.

As Hyrule becomes completely submerged, King Daphnes bids goodbye to the Hero of Winds and Tetra, telling them to seek out a new land to replace Hyrule. However the Hero of Winds holds out his hand in an attempt to convince King Daphnes to come with them. King Daphnes briefly reconsiders his decision to remain with Hyrule, before resigning himself to his fate.
