- "Ahh, but that first meeting between Link and his Loftwing was extraordinary. The bird that came to him was a Crimson Loftwing. It is a breed so rare we were sure for some time that it had vanished from the line."
- — Gaepora
The Crimson Loftwing is a character from The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. He is Link's Loftwing who aids the hero when traveling through The Sky or to The Surface. He is unique in the fact that he has fur instead of feathers on his upper wings.
Prior to the Wing Ceremony, Groose, Cawlin and Strich kidnap the Crimson Loftwing and imprison him inside a small cave beyond the Waterfall Cave. With the help of Eagus, Zelda and his classmates, however, Link is able to find the Crimson Loftwing past the Waterfall Cave and participate in the race. Described by Headmaster Gaepora as a rare breed, the Crimson Loftwing was once thought to be extinct. Link and his Loftwing were immediately able to bond and work together, something that made Zelda envious of as her father noted.
During his quest, Link has to rid the spirit of the skies Levias of a parasite. In order to do this, Owlan teaches Link the Spiral Charge to perform while riding the Crimson Loftwing. This technique allows Link to perform a drill-like attack, enabling him to rid Levias of his parasite. It is known that the Crimson Loftwing is very rare.
Link's Level 3 Great Fairy weapon, the Great Sky Fairy wears a Crimson Loftwing costume.
The Crimson Loftwing can be seen flying around the Skyloft stage and appears as part of the Crimson Loftwing and Skyloft Trophies.
Hylian Bird Crest
It is possible that the red, eagle-like crest on the Hylian Shield represents a Crimson Loftwing, given its coloration and birdlike appearance.
Given its similarities in coloration and bond with Link, it is possible that it spirit may have reincarnated into the various incarnations of Epona. This may explain Epona's extraordinary jumping ability (possibly a vestige of her past life as a Loftwing that soared through the sky).
