Lizalfos

Template:Enemy Lizalfos is a recurring lizard-like enemy in Template:LZS.

Characteristics

Lizalfos are sword wielding lizard-like enemies with large tails. In Skyward Sword, they outfit themselves with large rocky gauntlets. It is common for Lizalfos to confront Link in pairs, but he will usually only have to actually fight with one at a time. When a member of the pair gets injured, it steps back, and the other one takes charge. They are very agile in combat and tend to swing their weapon at Link whenever they get a chance, though there are always opportunities to attack the creatures when they drop their guard. They tend to circle Link first and then approach on the counter attack; they can cover long distances by swiftly hopping.

Appearances

Ocarina of Time

In Ocarina of Time, Lizalfos brandish swords and have little armor. They are very agile, for they are able to jump far out of Link's attack range, as well as capable of leaping over the young hero's head to deliver a strike from behind. They first appear in Dodongo's Cavern, where two pairs act as the dungeon's mini-bosses. Despite having to face off against a duo, Link does not have to fight both simutaneously, because one engages the young hero, while the other watches from afar. Befitting their tendency to fight in pairs, after one Lizalfos sustains enough damage, the two switch roles with one another. They are seldom encountered within the game, only appearing as regular enemies later in the Spirit Temple and in certain other dungeons in Master Quest. A similar enemy known as Dinolfos appears later in the game, as well as in Majora's Mask (in which Lizalfos do not make an appearance).

Twilight Princess

In Twilight Princess, Lizalfos have an appearance that is more reminiscent of a dinosaur, their tails now roped with an axe blade that they can use as a secondary weapon. They come in two varieties: the normal "Axe-tail" variety and the "Skull-face" variation, which don skulls as helmets. They are easily defeated with Bomb Arrows or Hidden Skills such as the Back Slice and the Mortal Draw. In addition, Wolf Link is able to leap at and bite at their throats. Unlike Ocarina of Time, Lizalfos are much more common - appearing in parts of Hyrule Field in Lanayru Province in addition to numerous dungeons, including the Lakebed Temple, the Temple of Time, the City in the Sky, Hyrule Castle, and the Cave of Ordeals.

Similar but much larger and heavily armored enemies known as Dinolfos (also known as Dynalfos) appear in the Temple of Time and the City in the Sky. They are considerably more dangerous opponents than Lizalfos, capable of dodging the Ending Blow and blocking many other attacks. A winged variety of Lizalfos called the Aeralfos also appears later in the game.

Skyward Sword

In Skyward Sword, Lizalfos are first encountered in the Earth Temple as regular enemies, and a pair also acts as the dungeon's miniboss, guarding the Bomb Bag, similar to their first appearance in Ocarina of Time. They adorn their forearms with large iron gauntlets that they can utilize in both their offense and defense. For example, the guard prevents them from being knocked over from normal attacks. Besides being adept defenders, Lizalfos are very nimble and can swiftly dodge sword strikes, and they can harm Link by blowing streams of fire and by mashing him with the maces found on the tips of their tails. In addition to the Earth Temple, the saurian creatures can be found at the Lanayru Shipyard, the Pirate Stronghold, and the Volcano Summit. An efficient way to slay a Lizalfos is to use strong attacks that make them fall on the ground such as the Spin Attack. After this happens, Link can use the Fatal Blow to kill them.

Dark Lizalfos

Dark Lizalfos are dark blue/black Lizalfos that appear as mini-bosses in the Fire Sanctuary, though they also appear in the Sky Keep. They are stronger than normal Lizalfos, as they are also able to curse Link with their dark fire breath, immobilizing the hero. Dark Lizalfos also appear to have large bright orange crests that sit upon the tops of their heads.

Defeating either of the two varieties of Lizalfos will make it drop its tail, which can be collected as Treasure.

Hyrule Warriors

In Hyrule Warriors, Lizalos attack by either slamming their foes with their tails or by breathing fire in the form of fireballs and streams. To block attacks, they wear a small yellow shield on their left arm. They are also shown to be capable of speech in this game. Initially, their pre-release design was originally similar to their Skyward Sword appearance, but was then changed to one based off of their Ocarina of Time depiction.

Trivia

In Twilight Princess, Arrows will stick to Lizalfos indefinitely and can be retrieved.
Dark Lizalfos have crests on their heads similar to those of Dairas from The Adventure of Link.
While Lizalfos do not appear in games prior to Ocarina of Time, similar enemies known as Geru appear in The Adventure of Link. These enemies may have provided inspiration for Lizalfos.
