The Bean Seller is a recurring character in The Legend of Zelda series.[1]

Biography[]

Ocarina of Time[]

In Ocarina of Time, the Bean Seller sells Magic Beans, which can grow into magic leaves that are able to carry Link to otherwise inaccessible areas. He can be found sitting beside Zora's River, where he constantly feasts on the beans he carries in his sack. Once Link has purchased his first Magic Bean he will explain how to plant them in patches of Dirt Patch[2]. These Magic Beans are not very popular at first and are relatively cheap,[3] but each time Link buys a pod of beans, the price for the next pod jumps by 10 Rupees.[4] The Bean Seller's notions about their popularity changes gradually until he calls them "legendary."[5][6][7][8][9][10][11] Eventually, due to Link's patronage, he believes that they are so popular that he refuses to part with them for under 100 Rupees.[12] After the last Bean is bought, he says that he is sold out of Magic Beans.[13]

During the ending sequence the Bean Seller and the Lake Scientist can be seen with the Carpet Merchant floating on his carpet at Lon Lon Ranch.

Majora's Mask[]

In Majora's Mask, the Bean Seller hides in a Grotto within the Deku Palace.[14] Unlike his Ocarina of Time counterpart, his Beans sell for 10 Rupees no matter how many Link buys, with the first pod being free.[15] In Majora's Mask 3D, the Bean Seller informs Link that he can enter the Outer Garden from within his Grotto, and that he must water the Magic Beans in order for them to sprout.[16]

Trivia[]

  • The Bean Seller has tattooed on his arm.
