[edit] Biography

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Barnes is very cowardly. This becomes apparent when Kakariko Village is invaded. Any time he is scared he brings his face guard down in a comical fashion.

Barnes is first encountered when Kakariko is covered in Twilight. He is inside Renado's sanctuary, hiding from the Shadow Beasts with Renado, Luda and all of the children from Ordon Village. It is suggested that he tried to scare the Shadow Beasts away using bombs, but figured that if he got caught by the monsters then he would become a monster himself (because the town shopkeeper disappeared after being attacked). He tells this to the Ordon Village children and is snapped at by Renado for frightening them. It is suggested that Renado does not think highly of Barnes since he doesn't introduce him to Link.

When Link first visits his Bomb Shop, all he has are regular run of the mill bombs for sale; this is due to a mishap that Link had, where he accidentally caused the entire stock of bombs to explode. Link and Midna just barely escaped from the blast themselves. Even so, he cannot make more bombs because he requires materials that can only be acquired from trading with the Gorons, who at the moment are hostile, and can not be reasoned with. It is possible to enter his shop in wolf form after the Twilight is gone.

After relations with the Gorons have improved, Barnes is able to create Water Bombs and Bomblings, which Link adds to his arsenal. The Water Bombs are especially useful in opening the Lakebed Temple.

The Postman always delivers a letter to Link from Barnes, any time he gets a new bomb type in stock.

As a bomb maker, Barnes is naturally paranoid when it comes to open flames in his shop. He even goes as far as to install a manual controlled sprinkler system to douse flames wherever he finds them, including Link: if Link brings out his lantern, Barnes will douse him with water to put out the flame.
